CMU McGinnis Venture Competition – Local leaders pledge assistance to CMU startups early on-ramp to CMU’s $2.7 Billion annual influence on Pittsburgh economy.

As Meredith Grelli, Interim Director of the Carnegie Mellon University Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship and I prepared for the 2026 McGinnis Venture Competition, we discussed the significance of the McGinnis Competition for the Pittsburgh region.

As the competition is named for the founder of Respironics, Gerald McGinnis, we recounted the impact of his one-time start-up company on the Pittsburgh economy. At its peak, Respironics contributed roughly $1.5 billion to the Pittsburgh economy with hundreds of local employees and partnerships with regional vendors.

In honor of his legacy, Meredith reached out to our civic leaders to help encourage these CMU student entrepreneurs to start (and hopefully, keep) their new companies here. Asking for support from the region’s leaders is an easy lift. A recent study estimated that CMU’s ecosystem presents a $2.7 billion bump in local economic activity. Read more about that study here.

We celebrated last week when three key leaders in the region accepted Meredith’s invitation to greet the participants at the 2026 McGinnis Venture Competition.

After an inspiring Tartan bagpipe introduction as participants entered the auditorium, Senator McCormick prepared an energizing welcome video to help kick off the event. Mayor O’Connor and Executive Director Immorato emphasized the city and county’s interest in helping the student founders grow their companies here in Pittsburgh. Mayor O’Connor’s office followed up after the event with an invitation to speak to the winning companies.

We expect that the McGinnis Competition will continue to launch successful venture capital companies as part of the leading edge offered by CMU’s areas of expertise. It would be a fitting outcome to Jerry McGinnis’ legacy if the competition contributes measurable growth and job activity to Pittsburgh’s economy.

A hearty “Thank you” to Mayor O’Connor, County Executive Immorato and Senator McCormick from the McGinnis Venture Competition family for their support of this year’s competition.
